KdS project
The Architectural Monuments of Switzerland (KdS)
This major academic project uses the methods of monument topography to investigate Switzerland’s architectural heritage. The results of this research have been published in a series of books since 1927. The series provides a concise, academically rigorous and accessible overview of architectural production in Switzerland from late antiquity to the 20^(th) century.
The series lays the foundations for understanding these monuments within their historical context. It is an essential prerequisite for further research into these monuments, as well as for their maintenance and conservation. The work is organised topographically and divided into cantonal series. Each volume considers the regional stock of monuments and evaluates it in a national context.
The project is supported by a public–private partnership between the Society for Swiss Art History (GSK) and the cantons, with additional funding from the Confederation. The GSK oversees the project as a whole, ensuring its academic quality, and publishes the research findings in a series of volumes covering all cantons. Inventory work and research are carried out within the cantons and funded by them.
By the end of 2026, 152 volumes will have been published.
