Der Seidenkaufmann Johann Heinrich Frey liess sich um 1772–1774 vor der Stadt Zürich einen prächtigen Landsitz errichten. Das Wohnhaus besticht durch seine Innenausstattung im Stil des späten Rokoko, deren Glanzpunkt der mit Aubusson-Tapisserien ausgestattete Festsaal bildet.
